Artist Statement – Darryl Swanson

My name is Darryl Swanson, and I am a self-taught oil painter living in San Diego, California. My work is deeply rooted in my connection to the outdoors and the quiet inspiration I find in nature. Whether I am standing along the shoreline, hiking through a hillside, or observing the delicate details of wildlife, painting allows me to express the places and moments that bring me peace.

While much of my inspiration comes from plein air painting along the ocean—where the rhythm of the waves, the shifting foam patterns, and the warm glow of San Diego sunsets move me—I am equally drawn to the beauty found in landscapes and wildlife. I love capturing the soft morning light on coastal hillsides, the character of small beach towns, and the vibrant personality of birds. From the powerful motion of the sea to the stillness of a perched macaw, each subject holds its own story, and I strive to paint that emotion as honestly as I can.

Nature, for me, is a calming place where I feel closest to my inner self. It offers a peaceful ambiance that fuels my creativity and guides my brush. Every painting is a reflection of what I see and feel in the moment—the colors, the atmosphere, the energy, and the connection between land, sea, and wildlife.

I am very active in the art community, participating in art walks, exhibitions, and community events throughout San Diego County. My work has been honored locally, including earning Second Place at the ECAA Gallery in Downtown El Cajon. The City of El Cajon has also recognized me as one of the region’s most inspired nature artists. I’m grateful that my paintings continue to be admired by the East County community, and I look forward to expanding my exhibitions from East County to other coastal areas, including Del Mar.

Whether I am painting a breaking wave, a peaceful coastline, or the striking colors of a bird’s feathers, my goal is always the same: to capture the spirit of nature and invite viewers into the quiet beauty that inspires me every day.
